A recent study published in the US Journal of Pediatrics has claimed a disturbing correlation between the use of baby products and increased phthalate levels in infants which has sparked much concern from parents and community groups worldwide. 'Phthalates', a large variety of chemicals found in a variety of everyday products, have been linked to cancer and birth defects in the reproduction system, including reduced fertility and testicular abnormalities, according to a report conducted by the Environmental Working Group.
This report titled "Not Too Pretty - Phthalates, Beauty Products and the FDA" has also stated that laboratory tests have found these chemicals in an alarming number of commonly available deodorants, hair gels, mousses, hairsprays and body lotions in concentrations from trace amounts to nearly 3% of the product formulation. Unfortunately, loop holes in federal law currently allow cosmetic manufacturers to put unlimited amounts of phthalates in their products - without any required testing, monitoring of the subsequent health effects, or even any labeling requirements.
In order to give peace-of-mind to customers and retailers purchasing GAIA Natural Baby skin and hair products for their pure, natural organic properties, Managing Director and Creator of GAIA Natural Baby, Michelle Vogrinec, states emphatically, "GAIA Natural Baby product formulations do not contain any phthalate ingredients and the bottles we use are made from recyclable high density poly-propylene and poly-ethylene, which are phthalates free."
Further to this, Michelle assures parents, "GAIA Natural Baby products are free from known harmful chemicals, talc, or irritants such as soap or sulphates and are formulated using only pure, natural and organic ingredients known for their skin-softening and nurturing properties. They are purposely formulated for use on baby's delicate skin - potentially even those with sensitive skin or skin affected by eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis."
Being exported to over 13 countries world-wide, GAIA Natural Baby products must adhere to the guidelines of a number of different governing bodies. "In Europe they have quite stringent regulations on these things and consumer groups are also calling for similar regulations in the US." said Michelle.
At this stage, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is yet to make recommendations and has taken no action to reduce the use of these chemicals.
